West Marine Ultra-Slim Manual Inflatable Life Jacket Belt Pack – Comfort and Safety Combined

The single biggest reason people don't wear a life jacket is comfort — or more accurately, the lack of it. Bulky foam PFDs restrict movement, trap heat, and get in the way of paddling, casting, and enjoying the water. The result is a life jacket that stays in the bag while the person who needs it most goes unprotected. The West Marine Ultra-Slim Manual Inflatable Belt Pack solves this problem at its root. Worn around the waist like a fanny pack, it provides USCG-approved Type V PFD protection in a profile so low and a fit so unobtrusive that most wearers genuinely forget it's there — until the moment it matters.

This is the life jacket designed for people who want to be safe on the water without sacrificing the freedom of movement that makes paddling, fishing, kayaking, and recreational boating enjoyable in the first place.

Belt Pack Design — The Lowest-Profile USCG-Approved PFD Available.
Traditional inflatable PFDs — even the slim over-the-shoulder styles — create some degree of shoulder and chest restriction. For kayakers, stand-up paddleboarders, canoeists, and anglers who spend hours in repetitive upper-body motion, that restriction adds up over a full day on the water. The belt pack format eliminates it entirely. The entire device sits at the waist, secured with a buckle closure, completely clear of the shoulders, chest, and arms. Your paddle stroke, casting motion, and range of movement are completely unaffected. The slim, low-profile pouch construction keeps the pack from snagging on kayak cockpit coamings, SUP deck rigging, or boat seats during normal activity.

Manual Inflation — Simple, Reliable, Pull-Cord Deployment.
The Ultra-Slim is a manual-inflation PFD, activated by a sharp pull on the inflation cord. Upon activation, the 16g CO2 cartridge fires through the Halkey Roberts 840 Manual inflator, rapidly deploying the bladder to its full inflated volume. Manual inflation is the appropriate choice for this PFD category and use case — paddlers and recreational boaters who choose a belt pack are active, aware participants who will recognize an immersion situation and pull the cord. The manual-only design also eliminates the risk of inadvertent automatic inflation from spray, rain, or wet conditions — a real concern in kayaking and paddling activities where the wearer is routinely exposed to water without being in danger.

Dual Inflation System — CO2 Primary, Oral Backup.
The Ultra-Slim provides two independent inflation paths for reliable buoyancy in any situation:

  • Primary: 16g CO2 Cartridge — Rapid, hands-free inflation via the Halkey Roberts 840 Manual inflator. A single pull of the cord fires the cartridge, deploying the bladder in seconds. This is the primary emergency inflation method.
  • Backup: Oral Inflation Tube — After CO2 inflation, or as a primary inflation method if the CO2 system is not functioning, the oral inflation tube allows the wearer to add buoyancy by breath. Oral inflation can add up to 7.5 lbs. of additional buoyancy beyond the CO2-inflated baseline.

Total Buoyancy Breakdown:

Inflation Method Buoyancy Provided
CO2 cartridge only 19 lbs.
CO2 + full oral inflation Up to 26.5 lbs.

This dual-system design provides meaningful redundancy — if the CO2 system has degraded or misfires, the oral tube provides a functional backup inflation path.

USCG Type V with Type III Performance — Understanding What This Means.
The Ultra-Slim carries USCG Type V approval, with inflated performance equivalent to a Type III PFD. For paddling and recreational boating — the intended use case — Type III performance is the appropriate standard. Type III PFDs provide a minimum of 15.5 lbs. of buoyancy and are designed to keep a conscious wearer afloat in calm to moderate water conditions. The Ultra-Slim's 19 lbs. CO2-inflated buoyancy exceeds the Type III minimum by a meaningful margin.

Critical regulatory note: As a Type V PFD, the Ultra-Slim must be worn — not stowed in a dry bag, not clipped to the kayak deck, not tucked under a bungee — to satisfy USCG PFD carriage requirements. A Type V PFD counts toward the required one PFD per person only when it is actually on the wearer's body. This is the fundamental trade that makes the belt pack design work: it's comfortable enough to wear all day, which means it's actually on your body when you need it.

Important Swimmer Requirement.
This PFD is recommended for competent swimmers only. Unlike an automatic offshore PFD that deploys and turns the wearer face-up without any action required, the Ultra-Slim requires the wearer to pull the inflation cord and then manually place the inflated bladder over their head and position it in front of their body for buoyancy support. This requires a calm, competent response in the water — the reason the manufacturer's recommendation limits use to competent swimmers aged 16 and older weighing more than 80 lbs.

Nylon Pouch Construction — Lightweight, Durable, Weather-Resistant.
The shroud and pouch are constructed from nylon — a material that balances low weight, durability, UV resistance, and water resistance in a compact belt-mounted package. The nylon construction resists the UV degradation and moisture damage that shortens the service life of lower-quality materials, keeping the pack looking and performing well through seasons of regular use.

Universal Fit — Buckle Closure for Easy On/Off.
The belt pack is designed in a universal size appropriate for persons 16 years of age and older who weigh more than 80 lbs. The buckle closure allows quick donning and doffing without adjustment — clip in at the launch, unclip at the takeout. The adjustable belt accommodates a wide range of waist sizes while maintaining a secure, stable fit during active paddling and water sports.

Annual Service Interval — Simple, Straightforward Maintenance.
The Ultra-Slim requires annual inspection and service — standard for all inflatable PFDs. At minimum annually, inspect the bladder for damage, confirm the CO2 cartridge is properly seated and unpunctured (weigh it against the labeled weight), inspect the inflator mechanism, and repack per the Owner's Manual instructions. The compatible replacement CO2 cartridge and rearming kit is the Leland Rearming Kit (Part No. 840AMU-82123Z), available separately.

After any inflation — emergency, accidental, or practice — the PFD must be fully inspected, the bladder dried, and a new CO2 cartridge and arming mechanism installed before returning to service. Never go on the water with an uninspected or unarmed inflatable PFD.
