Teak sealers and wood treatments preserve, protect and beautify teak.
Anyone who loves or admires boats experiences a little flutter in their chest when they see a vessel with beautifully maintained teak. To get that head-turning look all you need is the right choice of product and to apply bit of effort yourself.
Types of Teak Sealers and Wood Treatments
There are a couple types of teak sealers. Some are formulated to seal the grain of teak and promote the adhesion of varnish. Other teak sealers can be used as a topcoat themselves. Applying a teak sealer helps to protect teak by keeping natural oils in and moisture and dirt out of the wood. Depending on your desired finish, you can select a sealer with a slight tint or one that is clear.
Teak treatments are another option. Teak treatments, like Sikken’s line of Cetol products are offered with varying amounts of pigments that give you the option of a clear, translucent or opaque finish.
Caring for teak requires a little patience, but is well worth it! When choosing a teak sealer to use in regular maintenance, look for one that offers features that make it easy to apply.
Caring for Your Teak
Teak that has weathered and become gray or black with age should be cleaned and sanded prior to sealing. West Marine offers teak cleaners that quickly get the black out of teak. After cleaning the teak, you will need to follow up with a teak brightener which will reestablish the natural color of the wood. Where deep cleaning is not required, you can also choose a one-step teak cleaner/brightener.
Make heads turn!
Cleaning, sanding and protecting your teak with a sealer or varnish is a great way to show pride of ownership and make you the envy of anyone walking the docks.
