West Marine offers a complete selection of lubricants for your outboard or inboard engine.

Outboard and inboard engines require lubricants to keep them working smoothly. West Marine offers a selection of marine oils and greases to meet these requirements. Types of marine lubricants include lower unit lube, 4-stroke engine oil, 2-cycle outboard oil and specialty oils.

Lower Unit Lube

Lower unit lube is gear oil formulated for use in outboard and stern drive lower units which are underwater during operation. Because of the exposure to water, lower unit lube has to be very resistant to breakdown from water. It also must be periodically changed. West Marine offers a choice of lower unit gear oil pumps to accomplish this process without spilling. Common lower unit lubricants found at West Marine include Hi-Viscosity 80W-90, Hypoid 90W, and Type C. West Marine sells lower unit lubes under the West Marine, Quicksilver and Sierra brands.

Engine Oil

Engine oil is circulated in inboard engines and four-stroke outboards to lubricate the internal parts. West Marine sells premium engine oils under the West Marine, Pennzoil, Chevron, Quicksilver, Shell and Sierra brands. Popular formulations include Chevron's line of Delo motor oils for gasoline and diesel engines and Shell's line of Rotella oil for diesel engines.

2-Stroke Oils

2-cycle gasoline engines and outboards require special oil that is mixed in with the gasoline for lubrication. When shopping for 2-stroke oil, look for the TC-W3 designation, which denotes oil that is suitable for outboard engine use. West Marine sells TC-W3 oil under the West Marine, Quicksilver, Evin-Johnson and Sierra brands.

Specialty Oils

Specialty oils include hydraulic oil, power steering fluid and power trim and tilt fluid all of which West Marine sells.

Engine Lubricant Oil FAQ

High-quality lubricant oil provides essential protection for marine engines, reducing friction, wear, and corrosion. This oil creates a smooth barrier between moving parts, preventing damage from heat and friction. Additionally, premium lubricant oils help maintain engine cleanliness by reducing sludge and deposit buildup, ensuring a more efficient and longer-lasting engine performance. Using the right lubricant oil is crucial for keeping your boat engine reliable and protected in challenging marine environments.

Marine lubricant oils come in different types, including synthetic, semi-synthetic, and mineral-based oils. Synthetic lubricant oils offer superior performance in extreme conditions, providing maximum protection and fuel efficiency. Semi-synthetic oils combine the benefits of synthetic and mineral oils, offering a balance between cost and performance. Mineral-based oils are also effective, especially for engines with lower performance demands. Choosing the right type of lubricant oil depends on your engine specifications and boating conditions.

The frequency of lubricant oil changes depends on factors like engine type, usage, and manufacturer recommendations. Most marine engines benefit from regular oil changes after 50-100 hours of use or at least once a season to ensure optimal performance. Using fresh lubricant oil reduces engine wear, prevents buildup, and enhances fuel efficiency. Always refer to your engine manual for specific guidelines, as routine oil changes are key to prolonging engine life.

Yes, using high-quality lubricant oil can improve fuel efficiency by reducing internal friction and ensuring smoother engine operation. Lubricant oil minimizes the resistance between moving parts, allowing the engine to run more efficiently. Regularly changing the oil and using the right grade can further improve fuel economy, as a well-lubricated engine consumes less energy, providing better fuel efficiency and saving costs over time.

Synthetic lubricant oils are engineered to provide enhanced performance in extreme temperatures, offering better protection against wear and oxidation. They are ideal for high-performance engines and demanding conditions. Mineral-based oils are derived from natural sources and offer solid protection for standard engines, often at a lower cost. While synthetic oils provide better overall performance, the choice depends on your engine type and operational requirements.

To choose the right lubricant oil, consider your engine’s specifications, manufacturer recommendations, and the type of boating you do. High-performance engines often require synthetic or semi-synthetic oils for optimal protection, especially in high-load or extreme conditions. Always check for oils that meet or exceed your engine’s requirements, as using the appropriate lubricant oil is crucial for maintaining engine health, reducing wear, and ensuring smooth operation in diverse marine environments.
