Gain peace of mind with an automatic, fixed mount, USCG-approved fire extinguishing system.
If your boat has an inboard engine, installing a fixed-mount, automatic fire extinguisher in the engine compartment can help protect your boat against an engine room fire—even when you are not there. West Marine offers conventional, fixed-mount fire suppression systems by FIREBOY-XINTEX and a unique, non-traditional system by ELIDE FIRE USA.
Currently, FIREBOY-XINTEX systems use HFC-227 fire extinguishing agent and automatically activate when they sense the heat of a fire. West Marine offers these systems in different sizes to match the volume of different size engine compartments. (Editor’s note: The HFC-227 agent is currently being phased out and will be replaced by 3M’s Novec 1230 fire extinguishing agent.)
ELIDE’s system, referred to as the “ELIDE Fireball”, consists of a ball that contains a dry fire extinguishing agent. These balls can be mounted above any location where a fire might occur. When the ball comes in contact with a flame it undergoes a harmless detonation that disperses the extinguishing agent and extinguishes the fire in 3–5 seconds. The ball can also be removed from its mount hand tossed into a fire if needed. Currently, ELIDE fireballs are not USCG approved—but can be installed to complement a USCG-approved fire extinguishing system.
All fire extinguishing systems require periodic inspection, maintenance and replacement if needed. Items related to fire extinguishing systems include automatic engine shutdown systems and fire extinguisher manual release cable kits.
Fixed Fire Extinguishers FAQ
A fixed fire extinguisher system is an automatic fire suppression unit installed in the engine compartment of a boat. It activates when detecting high heat or flames, releasing a fire-extinguishing agent to suppress fires before they spread.
These systems are crucial for marine safety as they provide immediate response even if the crew is not present, reducing the risk of extensive damage or injury.
To select the right fixed fire extinguisher system, consider:
- Engine Compartment Size: Choose a system with the correct capacity to cover the designated area.
- Extinguishing Agent: Common agents include clean gas, dry chemicals, and foam-based suppressants.
- USCG Certification: Ensure the system complies with U.S. Coast Guard safety standards.
Proper sizing and compliance ensure optimal fire protection for your vessel.
There are two main types of fire suppression solutions:
- Conventional Fixed Systems: Use automatic activation with chemical or gas-based extinguishers.
- ELIDE Fireballs: Activate upon direct contact with flames, dispersing a dry agent. These can be mounted or manually tossed into a fire.
While ELIDE fireballs offer a unique rapid response, they are considered supplemental and may not replace traditional fire suppression systems.
.Installation should follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and typically involves:
- Mounting the extinguisher in the engine compartment.
- Ensuring unobstructed coverage for fire detection and suppression.
- Connecting any necessary activation components.
Maintenance:
- Regularly inspect for leaks, corrosion, or obstructions.
- Check expiration dates and replace components as required.
- Test the system periodically to ensure functionality.
Most fixed fire extinguisher systems are USCG-approved, but it’s essential to check individual product certifications.
ELIDE fireballs, for example, are considered a supplemental fire suppression tool and are not currently classified as a primary USCG-certified fire extinguisher.
Yes, combining fixed and portable fire extinguishers enhances safety. Fixed extinguishers provide automatic protection in enclosed spaces like engine rooms, while portable extinguishers allow for manual firefighting in other areas of the boat.
A well-rounded fire safety plan should include both types for maximum coverage.
