Rust-Oleum Paints and Primers

Given Rust-Oleum’s popularity among boaters, it is by no coincidence that Rust-Oleum metal primers and topcoats had their genesis in 1921 onboard a ship, when Captain Robert Fergusson noticed how fish oil prevented rust from forming on his vessel's metal deck. Shortly thereafter, with the assistance of a chemist, Captain Fergusson created the first Rust-Oleum Metal primer.

Over 100 Years Later

Now, over one hundred years later, the Rust-Oleum brand enjoys an iconic status. The original fish oil formulas having been retired, Rust-Oleum's modern formulas now include resins derived from alkyds, polyurethanes, epoxies, and latex. West Marine is happy to offer a variety of Rust-Oleum products. In addition to metal primers designed to control rust, choices include a variety of spray paints for fiberglass, plastic, wood and other surfaces.

Choose Your Project

With easy spray application, do-it-yourselfers are able to complete a myriad of projects on a boat, RV or at home. Here are a few examples of how Rust-Oleum products are used:

  • Protecting Trailers from Rust and Corrosion: If your boat's trailer is showing signs of rust, give Rust-Oleum Cold Galvanizing Compound a try. Consisting of 93 percent zinc, and with easy spray application, trailer boaters have an easy way to extend their trailer's life.
  • Making Objects More Visible at Night: Suitable for application on wood, metal, fiberglass plastic and more, Rust-Oleum's Specialty Reflective Finish can be used to increase the visibility of objects at night.
  • Protecting Objects Against Rust That You Don't Want to Paint: Rust-Oleum's Rust Inhibitor creates a transparent barrier against rust. Great for protecting metal items on at home, or on an RV or boat.
  • Converting Rust Into a Paintable Surface: Rust-Oleum's Rust Reformer chemically converts rust into a smooth, paintable surface, so there is no need to sand to bare metal.
