When your boat’s original fuel tank begins to leak or develops other problems, it might be time to replace it. Examples of problems include broken welds or rust on steel fuel tanks, osmosis on fiberglass tanks and cracking on polyethylene tanks. About Moeller Fuel Tanks
Moeller is West Marine’s main supplier of replacement fuel tanks for permanent, below-deck installation. Tanks are made of rugged, marine-grade, roto-molded polyethylene and are offered in capacities that range from 12 up to 82 gallons. Tanks are suitable for gasoline or diesel and meet ABYC, NMMA and USCG regulations.
Carefully measure for your new tank.
Before selecting your replacement fuel tank, measure its height, width and length, the location of the intake and the location of the vent. Dimensions of the tanks do not include the fittings, so allow an extra two and one-half inches for the fill neck and add three percent in all directions to allow for swelling when full.
Tank Installation
When installing a new fuel tank, take advantage of the opportunity to replace old hoses and fuel fittings. West Marine offers a Fuel Tank Installation Kit that along with a fuel deck fill fitting and a fuel tank vent fitting, includes an 18” fuel fill hose and a 35” fuel vent hose. For installations where this kit won’t suffice, you will need to purchase the hoses and fittings separately.
